Following questions from David Melding AM, Chair of the Health and Social Services Committee, Dr Brian Gibbons, Minister for Health and Social Services at the Assembly, has released a number of mental health statistics. Here we summarise them:
Number of people sectioned under the 1983 Mental Health Act in wales: 787 males and 600 females were admitted to NHS facilities and independent hospitals in Wales under the Mental Health Act 1983 and other legislation during 2003-04. That’s a total of 1387 people.
Number of hospital episodes during 2004-2005 in which at least one Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) procedure took place:
117, with 75 involving males and 42 involving females (data may be incomplete as further submissions may be received).
Death from suicides in Wales, 2003:
95 suicides by males up to the age of 34; 19 suicides by females up to the age of 34; total: 114.
